Middle school honors night canceled for ‘devastating’ impact

A middle school principal in Ipswich is being criticzed for canceling the school’s traditional honors night ceremony and saying in a letter to parents that it would be “devastating” to some students who didn’t make the grade.

Ipswich Middle School Principal David Fabrizio recently wrote a letter to parents informing them of the canceled event, according to WFXT.

“The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients’ families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade point average,” Fabrizio wrote.

However, since the letter was sent out, Fabrizio has said he plans to acknowledge the students during a year-end event in front of the entire student body. He defended the change in comments made to the Ipswich Chronicle.

“This isn’t the dumbing down of America. This isn’t everyone getting a trophy. The same kids who were honored before are being honored now,” he said.
