Rivera Community Garden: Philly crowdfunds its first municipal project

Philadelphia has successfully crowdfunded its first municipal project in partnership with Citizenvestor.com.

The Rivera Community Garden at the Rivera Recreation Center in North Philadelphia will be transformed into a 40-by-60-foot fenced in garden with smaller raised beds for children and larger beds for adults.

Fifty “citizenvestors” donated a total of $2,163 dollars to fund the garden through the site.

The money will go toward the city Department of Parks and Recreation, which will use it to purchase and plant greens.

The funds are expected to pay for three fruit trees, 12 berry bushes, 50 eco-perennials, 250 strawberries and groundcover plants, three cubic yards of mulch, a site-specific orchard design and planting supervision.

Rivera Community Garden organizers will this summer hold a horticultural education program at site for youth ages 6 to 12, teaching them about growing plants, garden critters, composting and healthy eating.

Children will learn to grow their own food and share it with the community, in the process becoming environmental advocates.

Organizers are partnering with the adjacent Mann Older Adult Center, whose members have committed to working with kids during the initiative.

Mayor Michael Nutter’s administration in September announced the city’s partnership with Citizeninvestor.com, which allows local governments to submit community improvement projects in need of funding.

The projects and their fundraising goals are then posted online, where citizens can directly donate to the cause of their choice.

Philadelphia is one of the first cities in the world that has allowed its residents to become “micro-philanthropists,” according to Citizenvestor co-founder Jordan Rayner.
