U.S. Rep Chaka Fattah was at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s 18th Annual Congressional Recognition Program on Wednesday to present the Courage Award to two Philadelphia children who fought off a would-be abductor last summer.

The 10-year-old girl and her brother, 2, received the award for “their extraordinary bravery in the face of danger,” according to a release.

“Your bravery stands out today for everyone to see,” Fattah said as he presented the award.

“And it lets other kids know that they have a right to say no, to yell and ask for help when in danger. You’re an inspiration for us all and we’re very glad you’re safe.”

Police in July said the siblings were walking in the Whitman section of South Philadelphia when a man suddenly attacked them from behind, grabbed the girl and tried to drag her into a car.

The girl kicked and yelled and her brother screamed until, frustrated by the child’s cries, the man let the girl go.

The chilling incident was caught on camera in a video that made national headlines and ultimately led to an arrest.

“Police credit the children’s ultimate escape to their defensive behavior in fighting off the man,” a release from Fattah’s office stated.
