Richard DeCoatsworth: Former hero cop charged with alleged human trafficking

Richard DeCoatsworth is a former Philadelphia police officer who made headlines in 2007 when he was shot in the face but still managed to chase down his attacker, an act that brought him accolades and a gained him seat next to the first lady during a speech given by President Barack Obama.

But the onetime hero cop – who reportedly retired from the force on disability in 2011 – has found himself on the other side of the law after he was arrested on Saturday for allegedly forcing two women he met at a party to do drugs and perform sex acts.

Police said DeCoatsworth was at a party at a confidential location around 2 a.m. Thursday morning when he met the two females, who left with him.

DeCoatsworth allegedly took the women to a second confidential location, where he pulled out a handgun and forced them to do narcotics and perform sex acts, according to investigators.

Police said the women reported the incident after DeCoatsworth left and an investigation was launched.

DeCoatsworth was arrested on Saturday and arraigned shortly before 7:30 p.m. His bail was set at $60 million.

DeCoatsworth faces a slew of charges, including rape, human trafficking, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, false imprisonment, promoting prostitution, indecent exposure, indecent assault, sexual assault, carrying unlicensed firearms, witness intimidation, making terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, manufacturing, delivering or possessing narcotics with the intent to manufacture or deliver, controlled substance possession and possessing drug paraphernalia.

DeCoatsworth is next due in court on June 17 for a status hearing.
