Officials with the Delaware State Police were on Tuesday conducting a death investigation after a body was found in the Christiana River under the elevated section of the Christiana Bypass.

Investigators said an industrial painting crew was working under the bypass around 10:15 a.m. when employees found the decomposing body of a fully-clothed, adult white male.

The corpse was sitting in three feet of water about 12 feet away from the river’s western rock embankment, according to authorities.

State troopers, along with members of the New Castle County Swift Water Rescue Team, recovered the man’s body from the river and turned it over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the man’s cause and manner of death.

Eastbound drivers on the Christiana Bypass experienced intermittent delays, as traffic was restricted to one lane for about four hours as New Castle County Fire and Emergency Medical Services performed investigative and recovery operations at the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Delaware State Police Major Crimes Unit at Troop 2 at 302-834-2630, Ext. 208, or to submit a tip online, by downloading the Delaware State Police Mobile Crime Tip Application, by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, or by texting CRIMES (274637) with the keyword “DSP.”
