A Belmont woman said her GPS led her onto Commuter Rail tracks at the Brighton Street crossing Tuesday night before her SUV was struck by a Fitchburg-bound train.

According to Transit Police, just prior to Hittenger Street the GPS told the driver to take a right turn. She obeyed, however the turn positioned her SUV on the railroad tracks. After attempts to drive off the tracks were unsuccessful, the driver and her two children got out of the car and moved away from the tracks.

Shortly after, the train came through. The woman and her children were unharmed.

This is the second time in the past year that a driver has blamed a dangerous turn on a GPS. A woman’s car got stuck on the Green Line tracks in August in a similar situation.

A recent survey Harris Interactive recently conducted for Michelin polling 2,232 U.S. drivers aged 18 and older. It found that 63 percent who used GPS said the technology led them astray at least once by pointing them in the wrong direction, or by creating confusing routes.

Drivers also said their GPS has taken them off track an average of 4.4 times.
