Holden man attacked by bobcat in yard

Bobcat (Lynx rufus)

A Holden man had a scary surprise Monday evening when he returned home from work and was attacked by a bobcat.

Michael Voltruba got out of his truck, and went back into the passenger side to grab his things when he saw an animal run across the yard and into a small alleyway between the carport and his house, he told the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

Voltruba went to check out the situation, but came face to face with the animal, who growled at him.

He drew his pistol, which he just happened to have on him at the time. The animal lunged, but Voltruba grabbed it, threw it to the ground, and shot it twice. But not even that stopped the vicious animal.

Voltruba’s girlfriend, Justine Lapierre, unlocked his rifle from the house and handed it to him. Finally after a few more shots, the animal appeared to have died.

Now undergoing tests to ensure the bobcat didn’t have rabies, Voltruba is just grateful that he was packing heat when the bobcat decided to attack.

“If I didn’t have it, there’s a good chance I would have had to smother it or something,” he said of his weapon. “There’s a good chance I would have got cut to shreds.”

He managed to escape with just a few cuts.
