In celebration of the Supreme Court striking down the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman at the federal level, gay rights advocates and state officials will rally at Cambridge City Hall, the site of the first ever gay marriage in the country.

MassEquality announced the rally following today’s DOMA ruling, and said the decision “means the end to a two-tiered system for marriage. The federal government will now defer to the states in determining whether a couple’s marriage is legal.”

The celebration will kick off at 5:30 p.m. in front of Cambridge City Hall on Massachusetts Avenue, and will be hosted by MassEquality, ACLU of MA, GLAD, HRC, Family Equality Council, MGLPC, Boston Pride Committee, Cambridge GLBT Commission.

Those expected to speak at the rally include MassEquality Executive Director Kara Suffredini, Chris Ott of the ACLU of Massachusetts, Attorney General Martha Coakley, Cambridge City Councilor E. Denise Simmons, who was also the first openly lesbian mayor in the country, and others.
