Advocates with Fight for Philly rallied Thursday morning outside Gov. Tom Corbett’s Philadelphia office to protest Corbett’s refusal to accept federal funding provided by Obamacare – also known as the Affordable Care Act – to expand Medicaid in Pennsylvania.

The event, slated for 9:30 a.m. outside the Bellevue Building, located at 200 S. Broad St., will be part of a week of action encouraging the state legislature to seize the federal dollars up for grabs in order to fund Medicaid expansion.

The health care expansion would cover an estimated 700,000 uninsured Pennsylvanians and create thousands of job in the state, according to a release from Fight for Philly.

In a statement issued last week, Corbett criticized Washington for cutting federal dollars to the state’s education and human services programs while attempting to allocate extra dollars to fund extended Medicaid coverage.

“On the one hand, Washington is cutting federal resources to our human services programs, while on the other hand trying to convince the American people there is free money for a one-size-fits-all Medicaid expansion program,” he said.

“That’s why I am committed to reforming Pennsylvania’s Medicaid program to make it sustainable for the future.”

Fight for Philly activists on Wednesday staged several actions in Harrisburg, including a “sick-in” at the Governor’s Mansion and lobby visits to legislators.

Ten Pennsylvania protesters will hold overnight vigils at the Capitol each night this week in an attempt to show the legislature the human impact of the possible health care expansion, according to Fight for Philly.

The organization said protesters will be sleeping outside the Capitol, as permitted by police.
