A taxi driver was shot in his hand in West Philadelphia Thursday night during a robbery.

The shooting happened on the 200 block of South Farragut Street shortly before 10 p.m., according to police.

The taxi driver picked up the suspect on the 4800 block of Baltimore Avenue. The man told the driver to take him to 47th and Locust streets, but told him to pull over at Farragut and Walnut streets, where he produced a handgun and demanded money from the Freedom Taxi driver.

The robber’s gun discharged during a struggle, striking the victim in his hand. The suspect fled with cash, a cell phone and a car key, police said.

Police described the suspect as a thin, dark-skinned black male between 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall. He had a thick beard and mustache, and was wearing a gray hoodie and carrying a black backpack.

The victim was last listed in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The shooting happened about 10 p.m. at 46th and Walnut streets, 6ABC Action News reports.

The taxi driver reportedly picked up the man who ultimately shot him on Baltimore Avenue. The suspect announced the robbery a short time into the trip, and a struggle ensued, during which the robber’s gun discharged.

The victim, who drives for Freedom Taxi, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment.
