Three teenagers in Lawrence got an unexpected surprise when they found a loaded gun while searching for a missing ball.

The Lawrence Eagle Tribune reports that the Walther P22 handgun with a loaded magazine was found at 9 p.m. Sunday with the safety off, meaning it was ready to fire.

The boys, ages 13, 14 and 15, touched the gun because they assumed it was a toy.

“All parties at that time were somewhat unsure if this firearm was real,” Sgt. Shawn Quaglietta wrote in the police report. One boy’s parents took the gun up to their apartment and contacted police.

Because of some of the rusted spots on the gun that indicate exposure to the weather, police think it may be the same firearm utilized in a shooting directed at police in mid-June.

“It should be noted that some of the rust spots on the gun could be from the fact that it had rained for the past several days while the gun was laying outside exposed to the elements,” Quaglietta wrote.

Police think the gun landed in the brush on Conduit Street after a suspect fired shots at police on June 16. Michael Realejo was arrested and charged with assault with intent to murder with a firearm, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, refusal to stop for a police officer, speeding and leaving the scene of an accident, the Eagle Tribune reports. However, he was found to not have a weapon on him.

If the weapon is found to contain Realejo’s DNA, he could face additional charges.
