Bonanno mob family ‘capo’ and ‘soldiers’ indicted: Manhattan DA

gavel144096770Several members of the Bonnano mobster family, including ‘captain’ Nicholas Santora, were arrested and indicted today on myriad charges following a two-year-long investigation carried out jointly by the NYPD Organized Crime Investigation Division and the District Attorney’s Office’s Rackets Bureau, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. announced.

Two members were also charged with using their positions in a local teamsters union to garners clients for their illegal dealings.

“This crew’s use of a union president in its corrupt activities is detrimental for honest union workers everywhere,” Vance said.

The indictment includes 299 criminal acts under the charge of Enterprise Corruption, including extortion, loansharking, gambling, drug dealing, and selling guns.

The OCID and Rackets Bureau investigation involved undercover police work, surveillance, court-ordered eavesdropping, and search warrants for physical and internet-based evidence.

Vance said these charges are evidence that organized crime families are not just a thing of the past, and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly pointed to the varied activities in noting the expansion of the crime dealings of mafia families.

“The organized crime activity described in the indictment is as old as the Bonnano crime family, and as relatively new as on-line betting and trafficking in highly addictive Oxycodone,” Kelly noted.

According to court filings, the defendants loaned money at an interest rate of more than 200 percent, and profited from sales of marijuana, oxycodone, and as many as 300,000 tablets of Viagra and Cialis sold for anywhere from $5 and $20 per tablet.

The court filings also say the soldiers, who acted as protection for the captains, “frequently spoke of their fondness for guns and willingness to use them” on gamblers or borrowers who owed money. One of the soldiers was found to have a set of brass knuckles.
