Great white shark spotted on the Cape
A 15-foot great white shark was spotted off the coast of Cape Cod over the weekend.
WCVB reports the shark was seen off Chatham by George Breen, of the Cape Cod Shark Hunters.
The shark was prowling for seals when he was spotted.
Some Cape business owners are concerned with shark sightings, because they could possibly discourage tourists from coming to town and bolstering business over the summer. But according to the Cape Cod Times, there’s no connection between the two.
“There is a really big difference between the way politicians think the public will react and the way they really do,” Christopher Neff, a third-year doctoral student at the University of Sydney in Australia who has studied the economic implications of shark attacks, told the Cape Cod Times.
“Fearing there will be a drop in tourism is not evidence there will be,” he said. “If there was a lot of data about businesses going out of business, I would have seen it.”
