Brooklyn DA has convicted 46 sex abusers in Orthodox Jewish community

After launching a crackdown within the tight-knit religious group, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office has convicted 46 people in sex-attack cases within the Orthodox Jewish community.

District Attorney Charles Hynes released most of their names to The New York Post Sunday, just months before Hynes is up for reelection.

“We feel now it’s good for the community to know those who have been convicted,” spokesman Jerry Schmetterer told the Post.

Under a 4-year-old program called Kol Tzedek, Hebrew for “voice of justice,” 118 cases were pursued and 25 sex offenders were given jail time.

Of those convictions, 33 were felonies, 13 misdemeanors and 10 others were violations. Out of the 46, only one woman was convicted, for sexually abusing her son.

Some of those convicted were not Jewish, but their young victims were.

Officials said victims in Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community fear retaliation after being abused. At least 17 cases were dismissed or downgraded after victims and parents refused testimony.

Still, officials said more people are willing to come forward.

“There’s been a change in attitude—more accept coming into the criminal justice system,” Rhonnie Jaus, chief sex-crimes prosecutor, told the Post.
