A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed in East Harlem early Tuesday morning near a public housing project where five mayoral candidates stayed at over the weekend.

Olivia Brown was shot in the right hand and the left groin just before 3:40 a.m. and transported to Harlem Hospital, police said. She was later pronounced dead.

The shooting occurred on Park Avenue north of E. 132nd Street, minutes from the Lincoln Houses, a public housing development where five Democratic mayoral candidates slept Saturday night to highlight NYCHA conditions.

Former City Comptroller and mayoral hopeful Bill Thompson visited the Lincoln houses again just hours after the shooting.

“They’re concerned about safety,” Thompson said of the residents, noting security cameras could prevent crime. If elected, Thompson said he would put “someone who can better manage” NYCHA than its current chairman, John Rhea.

He added residents spoke to him about the lack of police in the area.

“There were a lot of police on Saturday when we were there and as soon as we left, the police left with us,” he said.

City Comptroller John Liu took a midnight tour of the neighborhood during his stay at the Lincoln houses. He said Tuesday’s shooting “hits home.”

“It is yet another wake-up call that the city needs to do more to protect NYCHA residents and neighbors with decent living conditions and stronger measures such as security cameras,” Liu said in a statement, noting the cameras had not been installed because of “bureaucratic red tape and incompetence.”

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, who also slept at the Lincoln Houses Saturday, said it was public officials’ duty to protect the residents he met.

“The neighbors I met at Lincoln Houses this weekend were no strangers to violence,” de Blasio said in a statement, adding, “They deserve better than this and we will keep fighting to ensure they get it.”

Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
