Eliot Spitzer doesn’t think Anthony Weiner should be mayor

When asked who he will vote for in the mayoral election, city comptroller candidate and former Gov. Eliot Spitzer acknowledged he doesn’t think former congressman Anthony Weiner should be mayor of New York.

“You’re not going to vote for Anthony Weiner?” MSNBC host Chris Matthews asked Spitzer on “Hardball” Monday night.
“Can you just say that? You don’t think he should be mayor of New York?”

“Fair point. That is correct,” Spitzer said.

Spitzer made the comment just a week after Weiner admitted to continuing the same sexually explicit conversations online that forced him to resign from Congress in 2011.

Several years earlier, Spitzer left the governor’s office after being linked to a prostitution scandal.

Matthews commended Spitzer for his decision to “split after just 48 hours.”

“You didn’t endure the agony nor waste our time with the fuss,” Matthews added, alluding to many Democratic politicians and pundits’ calls for Weiner to exit the mayoral race.

On the show, Spitzer also discussed how he would carry out the position of comptroller, which is the financial watchdog for the city and responsible for managing thousands of municipal employees’ pension funds.

In response to the segment, a spokeswoman for Spitzer’s main competition in the Democratic primary, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, released a biting statement.

“It’s clear that Eliot Spitzer thinks there are two standards: one for him, and one for everybody else,” Audrey Gelman said. “His comments are the height of hypocrisy.”
