Delaware State Police are investigating a kidnapping attempt that happened Sunday afternoon in Laurel.

Investigators said troopers responded to the Delmar Police Department after a 20-year-old woman told officers someone had just tried to abduct her.

The woman told authorities she was walking east on the 12000 block of Whitesville Road when around 3 p.m. a white four-door sedan pulled in front of her and a male driver got out.

The woman began running away from the stranger, who police said “was spooked off when a passing car approached.”

The car then made a u-turn and pulled in front of the woman a second time.

The man again exited and was this time able to grab ahold of the woman in an attempt to force her inside, according to investigators.

Police said the woman freed herself from the would-be kidnapper’s grasp when another vehicle approached and saw the two struggling.

The man got back into the car and fled west on Whitesville Road, while the passerby who interrupted the abduction attempt drove the woman to the Delmar Police Department to report the close call.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-7-inch to 5-foot-8-inch tall Hispanic male between 135 and 140 pounds with black hair down to his ears.

He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans and sneakers, and was driving a white four-door sedan with possible Virginia license plates.

Anyone with information on the suspect or crime is asked to contact Sgt. G. Windish at 302-856-5850 ext. 218, or to submit an anonymous tip by texting CRIMES (274637) with the keyword “DSP,” calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, by downloading the Delaware State Police Mobile Crime Tip App or by filling out this online form.
