Delaware State Police early Tuesday charged a Cheswold man with DUI after he allegedly blew a stop sign and crashed into a patrol car west of Dover.

Investigators said a 27-year-old state trooper was driving west on Forrest Avenue near Rose Valley School Road around 2:30 a.m. when Alex Weal, 28, failed to stop at a posted stop sign and drove into the intersection.

Weal, who police said was behind the wheel of a 2007 Mazda 3, allegedly struck the rear driver’s side of the 2010 Crown Victoria patrol car.

He then continued north across the intersection and came to a stop in a ditch along Cahoon Branch Road, according to authorities.

Investigators said the patrol car spun counter clockwise and came to a stop on Forrest Avenue.

The trooper, who was wearing a seatbelt, was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at Kent General Hospital and released.

Weal, who was not injured, was taken to Troop 3, where officers launched a DUI investigation.

He was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to have insurance in his possession and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Weal was arraigned and released on $4,000 unsecured bond.

Police said Tuesday morning the investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Forrest Avenue near Rose Valley School Road was closed for about three hours as the crash was cleared.
