Delaware State Police on Saturday arrested a Georgetown man for allegedly killing a 2-year-old girl during a DUI crash in Lewes.

Investigators said a 19-year-old man was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Trailblazer east on John J. Williams Highway when he stopped around 9:20 p.m. to make a left turn into a private driveway.

The car had its left turn signal on while waiting for westbound traffic to clear, according to authorities.

Henry Roblero-Mazariegos, 24, who police said was driving east behind the wheel of a 2002 Mazda Protege, allegedly failed to see the stopped Trailblazer and rear-ended the vehicle.

Police said Genesis Valazquez-Santizo, 2, was a rear seat passenger in the Mazda and was not properly secured, causing her to be ejected during the crash and propelled forward inside the car.

She was rushed to the Beebe Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead due to traumatic injuries

Roblero-Mazariegos was properly restrained and refused medical treatment, according to investigators.

The 19-year-old Chevrolet driver was properly restrained and uninjured.

Two passengers in the Chevrolet – two Lewes men, aged 21 and 17, were both properly belted and taken to the Beebe Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Their conditions were unavailable Sunday.

An investigation allegedly revealed Roblero-Mazariegos was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular assault and one count each of second-degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended or revoked license and failure to secure a child under 8 and below 65 pounds in a child restraint.

Roblero-Mazariegos was jailed at the Sussex Correctional Institution on $13,001 cash bond.

John J. Williams Highway was shut down in both directions for three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Authorities said Sunday the state police Crash Reconstruction Unit was continuing to investigate.
