Bolaris: On LeBron, Kimye’s kid, Weiner’s bid for mayor

This week’s top stories really illustrate the good, the bad and the ugly of celebrity life.

Let’s start with LeBron James. He made news this past week by having a police escort to Jay Z’s Miami concert. God forbid he was late to the show, so Miami police reportedly broke protocol so the NBA star could skip traffic.

Listen, LeBron, we all know you’re the baddest basketball player on the planet with an ego to match. But honestly, a police escort to get to a concert? Let’s say a true American hero, such as one of our fine military men and women who risk their lives and limbs protecting our country, were to get on the phone and ask for a police escort to take them to a concert. First and foremost, that would never happen, as most are unsung heroes. And secondly, the answer would be no. Major violation on King James.

OK, that was the good; now for the bad.

Kim Kardashian, whose claim to fame is a sex tape, enhanced buttocks and father who was part of O.J. Simpson’s defense team, recently (in case you haven’t heard) gave birth to a baby girl named North West. That’s right — North West. She and father Kanye West have been running around with baby North West, but you can’t see her because a blanket is always draped over her.

Are we talking about some kind of future messiah here? No, we are talking about TV ratings. They wanted to wait to display her to the world on Kris Jenner’s struggling TV show — a last ditch effort to save the program.

TMZ reported that the couple had originally debated using the baby’s first images to raise money for charity, but decided her mom’s show was a more worthy cause. The world now can move on, if only Kim would.

Now for the ugly, and I do mean ugly!

Former Congressman Anthony Weiner, alias “Carlos Danger.” It’s a name he used on the web to sext pictures of his weiner to young women. When the disgraced congressman handed in his resignation in June 2011, the affair was dubbed Weinergate by the press. He apologized and stated he would seek therapy.

Weiner returned to politics recently and is running for mayor of NYC. Guess what? Weiner is back at it again. This time though he thought he would be much smarter – he would use the alias Carlos Danger as sexted a 22-year-old for more than a year. By the way, Carlos Danger is married. He has admitted sexting at least three other women, sending more pictures of his now famous weiner.

Now for the kicker: He continues to run for mayor, and at one time, he was among the leaders. The New York Times editorial board, among many others, have demanded he leave the mayoral race. Weiner has said he has no intention to do so. I would expect first a book, then a movie on the life and times of Carlos Danger. That’s as ugly as one can get.
