Staten Island camp counselor re-arrested on sex abuse charges

A counselor at a summer camp in Staten Island was re-arrested Tuesday morning on charges of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl, law enforcement officials reported.

The counselor, 33-year-old Endrick Torres, works at Big Bird’s Playhouse summer camp in Staten Island. He was just arrested on August 14 on sex abuse charges stemming from an alleged incident on the camp bus on August 13 involving a different young female counselor.

Officials said Torres has been a counselor at Big Bird’s Playhouse for four years. Kids at the camp apparently refer to him as “Mr. E.”

Torres was released on $15,000 bond following the August 14 arrest and arraignment. His bail for this new case is set at $35,000.

A law enforcement source said the newest victim came forward after her mother saw news coverage of Torres’ August 14 arrest. The victim’s mother asked the victim about Torres, and the young camper became upset and told her mother she had been molested by Torres last summer.

The law enforcement source said the sex abuse reported in this new arrest occurred on at least eight separate occasions last summer on the camp bus and at a Staten Island movie theater.

The reported incident on August 13 that Torres was arrested for on August also allegedly happened on the camp bus, a law enforcement said.

 A representative from Big Bird’s Playhouse said they are preparing a statement.
Torres’ next court appearance is scheduled for August 30.
