The hospitalized victim in a violent assault in Union Square Park last week succumbed to his injuries on Monday, a law enforcement source reported.

Jeffrey Bobbit, 62, was on life support at Bellevue Hospital after being attacked in Union Square Park last Wednesday. The source said Bobbit went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. Monday.

An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner later on Monday morning determined the cause of death to be a fracture to the left base of his skull and intracranial hemorrhaging due to a blow to his head, the source said. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

Bobbit was attacked about 3 p.m. on Sept. 4 in Union Square Park across from 5 Union Square West, police reported.

Police said Lashawn Marten, 31, hit Bobbit, 62, once in the head, knocking him to the ground. Bobbit was never revived, police said.

A 64-year-old man attempted to come to Bobbit’s aid and was also knocked out by Marten, police said. Marten then knocked out a third man, 18, who tried to help the first two victims.

Two police officers with the Peddler Task Force, which regulates street vendors, were in the area and responded to the scene on foot, police said.

Both cops reportedly heard Marten say, “I’m gonna knock out the first white cop that comes near me.”

One of the cops was white and the other was Hispanic. The Hispanic cop reportedly said aloud, “Oh good, I’m Hispanic, so I’m good.”

Marten allegedly replied, “I’m gonna knock you out, too.”

All of the victims were white men. A witness reportedly told police the second victim told the witness he heard Marten say, “I’m gonna knock out a white guy.” A second witness reportedly told Gothamist he personally heard Marten say “I hate white people,” cops said.

Cops with the 13th precinct arrested and charged Marten with three counts of assault, a misdemeanor. Those charges have since been upgraded, particularly in light of Bobbit’s death being ruled a homicide.

Marten was arrested a few weeks ago for attacking a 20-year-old woman, police said. The victim reportedly told police Marten tried to punch her, then spat on her and walked away cursing. When Marten was arrested on that occasion, he gave police a fake name.

That victim was also white. After the Union Square attack, officers with the 13th precinct and the Hate Crimes Task Force interviewed her as part of the investigation, police said.

Marten will appear before a grand jury on Tuesday to face charges, a law enforcement source said.
