An Abington Township man was sentenced to a lengthy prison term for killing a man he had engaged in heated trash-talking on Facebook in the days before his July 2012 slaying.

Andre Dula, 23, was sentenced last week to eight to 16 years in prison for the July 17, 2012, shooting death of 27-year-old William Butler near the North Hills train station in Abington, Phillyburbs.com reports.

Dula and Butler began hurling insults at each other via Facebook and text messages after Butler’s sister and Dula’s cousin had a disagreement, according to authorities.

“This case highlights how social media escalates legitimate disagreements between people to the point where it ends up in senseless violence,” Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kelly Lloyd told Phillyburbs.com.

On July 17, 2012, Butler and some family members and friends hopped in their cars to go find Dula. A physical altercation ensued, and during the fight, Dula pulled a gun and began chasing Butler, shooting him in the back.

Dula pleaded guilty to third-degree murder earlier this year in a plea agreement that saw a first-degree murder charge dropped.
