Fundraiser gets an 87-year-old Red Sox fan to Fenway Park

A brick at Fenway park makes it clear where 87-year-old Allan Munroe’s lifelong passions lie: “Allan Munroe has 2 tru loves Norma & the Sox.” 

After losing his wife Norma to cancer in May, and breaking his hip shortly afterward, his family decided it was time to get grandpa to a Boston Red Sox game and fulfill his dream of seeing Fenway Park one last time.

“That’s been his thing for as long as I can remember. He’s always loved the Red Sox,” Angela McKinnon said of her grandfather, an Andover native turned Floridian in Palm Bay.

McKinnon launched a GoFundMe page in August with the hope of raising enough to cover air fare, a hotel and tickets to Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees.

The first three weeks only pulled in a few hundred dollars, but last week donations started to skyrocket.

“We received an anonymous donation of $1,000. Then Mashable did a story, and it just picked up from there,” said McKinnon.

As of Wednesday evening, 155 people had donated $6,350 — more than enough to bring Munroe, McKinnon and family members to Boston.

But Red Sox owners John and Linda Henry gave the family tickets after they got wind of Munroe’s story. He will open Saturday’s game by announcing, “Let’s play ball!”

Not only that, Ernie Boch Jr. chipped in for travel expenses, and The Westin Hotel in the Seaport District donated rooms. Because of that unexpected generosity, McKinnon said any leftover donations would be given to The Jimmy Fund.

“This restores my faith in humanity,” said McKinnon of the donations. “Even those who didn’t donate shared their stories, or sent kind words. Some people offered their seats. It has just been absolutely amazing.”

The group arrived in Logan Airport on Wednesday afternoon — Munroe’s 64th wedding anniversary.

Saturday will be the first time in roughly 50 years that the baseball fanatic has attended a game at Fenway Park.
