The newly constructed bus loop at 33rd and Dauphin streets officially opens today and gives more than 2,000 daily bus riders the chance to transfer to other routes safely.

The $4 million project, funded by a federal grant, revitalized the existing structure in Strawberry Mansion that dates back to 1901 and was last used as a trolley loop.

“We no longer operate trolleys there,” said Robert Lund, assistant GM of engineering, maintenance and construction for SEPTA. “It was in a sorry condition, pretty run down.”

The facility was restored over the last year and features an operator restroom, storage facility and covered shelter, raised platforms, designated crosswalks and new lighting.

“So it’s safer for our passengers,” Lund said. “They know exactly where to walk, exactly where the buses are going.”

The loop also boasts an environmentally friendly green roof, and original materials like bricks were recycled and used in the reconstruction. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. with officials from the city, government and SEPTA.
