A woman was struck and killed late Thursday night after her car broke down on Route 24 in Avon.

The woman was in the breakdown lane near exit 19 with her Jeep Liberty waiting for a friend to arrive to assist her when a man in a hearse veered into the lane, and slammed into her car from behind, WBZ reports.

The woman was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not yet been released by authorities.

There is no word on whether the driver of the hearse was injured.

The northbound lane of Route 24 was shut down overnight, but has since been reopened.
