Firefighters are battling a four-alarm fire that has broken out at the historic Quincy Masonic Building on Hancock Street near Quincy Center.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone was hurt or what caused the fire; however, the blaze is so large that meteorologists said its smoke is showing up on Doppler radar.

The fire was reported at 12:08 p.m. Monday.

Lt. Jack Sullivan of the Quincy Police Department said roads near the building are blocked off, but that no evacuations had been ordered. People in the area are encouraged to keep their windows closed, Sullivan said.

“All I can say is we did get a phone call from some workers and I don’t know what they were working on. They called and reported it. Smoke was coming through the duct work in the building,” Sullivan said in an interview with Channel 7. He said police called the fire department.

The historic building was reportedly being transformed into a boutique hotel. It was built in 1926 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
