Bikers hold vigil for friend injured in West Side Highway fight

Bikers turned out for a vigil outside St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in support of their friend, Edwin Mieses, who was badly injured in a violent altercation between a biker gang and an SUV driver on Sunday.

A fundraising website set up for Mieses has collected more than $2,000 in two days. Mieses may be represented by famed lawyer Gloria Allred in a suit against the SUV driver, Alexian Lien. Allred declined to comment on Thursday, but said she will be releasing a statement on Friday.

The fight occurred on and near the West Side Highway during a “Hollywood Stuntz” ride and was caught on video by a camera affixed to the helmet of one biker. Lien was pulled from his car and badly beaten by a mob of bikers. Lien’s wife and two-year-old daughter were in the car with him at the time.

Police have since questioned at least one other biker and seized video equipment from the Bellport, Long Island home of Kevin Bresloff, 37, the biker whose helmet cam captured part of the fight.

On Thursday, the Manhattan District Attorney declined to prosecute one of the bikers in custody, who police believed was one of two bikers who pulled Lien from his vehicle before the group of 20 to 30 motorcyclists beat him up.

Police believe they have identified the second of the two bikers, seen in the video using his helmet to bash in Lien’s window before Lien was yanked from the car. Police said their suspect, 38-year-old Reginald Chance, has a lengthy arrest record that includes charges of weapons possession and violent robberies. On Thursday, an NYPD official said detectives had located him, but Chance had already lawyered up. Chance’s lawyer reportedly told police Chance would turn himself in on Thursday or Friday.

Police also released two new photos on Thursday, requesting the public’s assistance in locating the men depicted, who officials say were witnesses to the assault.

Local politicians are also getting involved: Senator Adriano Espaillat, whose district spans part of the Bronx, Upper Manhattan and much of the West Side, including the West Side Highway, held a press conference on Thursday and showed a video he had previously provided the police. The video was captured from Mamajuana Café at 247 Dyckman Street. Espaillat said the video was recorded shortly before the assault occurred on the West Side Highway. Dozens of bikers can be seen swarming the area, including at least one driving on the sidewalk. Espaillat said he has been subjected to harassment and intimidation by bikers himself, and is now pushing for policy proposals that would regulate large crowds of motorcycles and provide prosecutors with new tools to approach cases involving motorcyclists.
