The State Liquor Authority conducted a week-long investigation into 250 licensed liquor sellers around the five boroughs and busted a whopping 76 for selling to underage customers.

Between Oct. 3 and Oct. 11, volunteer minors recruited by the City University of New York and the American Society for Industrial Security attempted to buy alcohol at various stores around the city. SLA Beverage Control Investigators went into the stores at the same time as the minors but separately, to observe and verify that illegal sales were made.

Charges of underage sales can cost a business up to $10,000 per violation, with $2,500 to $3,000 fines for first time offenders. Repeat offenders can have their liquor licenses suspended or revoked.

Of the 76 stores, 26 were in the Bronx, 23 in Brooklyn, 19 in Manhattan, six in Queens and two on Staten Island. The SLA insisted that penalizing these vendors allows “honest” businesses to survive.
