Former Congressman Major Owens, a long-time House representative from Brooklyn, passed away on Monday.

Owens, a Democrat, was 77. He served in the House of Representatives from 1983 to 2007.

Former colleagues and city officials on Tuesday mourned the loss of the 12-term Congressman.

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney hailed Owens’ “long and accomplished career in public service,” pointing to his start in the 1960s doing anti-poverty work in the city.

“Major dedicated much of his life’s work to empowering the disempowered,” Maloney noted.

Owens was also known for the critical role he played in getting the Americans with Disabilities Act passed.

“I am deeply saddened by Major’s death,” Maloney added. “He was a public servant of the highest order, and he will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends for their great loss.”
