School is back in session at Danvers High, just days after beloved math teacher Colleen Ritzer was brutally murdered and left in the woody area behind the school.

As administrators attempt to resume a sense of normalcy, parents want answers when it comes to the safety of students and teachers.

Around a thousand parents of Danvers students headed to the Danvers High School Fieldhouse to meet and ask police questions on Thursday night. The meeting was not open to the press, but Danvers Police Chief Neil Ouellette held a short press conference after.

“We’ll never recover from the loss of Colleen, but we want to get this community and this school back to some sort of normalcy,”  Ouellette told reporters Thursday night, Danvers Patch reports.  ”We continuously monitor school safety issues…and continuously improve safety measures. We will certainly be looking forward, reviewing those policies to see if there’s anything we could change and improve in relation to this incident,” he said.

“We do critical…reviews in any major incident so clearly we’ll be doing that in this situation,” he said.

Grief counselors are providing assistance to students struggling with the incident as they head back to school, which is entirely reopened, except for the second-floor bathroom where Philip Chism allegedly murdered Ritzler.

“As classes resume tomorrow, we will continue to support our faculty and students as they cope with the loss of a truly inspiring teacher, Colleen Ritzer,” said School Superintendent Lisa Dana told parents. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Colleen’s family.”
