In an effort to dissuade people from drunk driving, Miller Lite and Hailo Boston are partnering to keep the roads safe this holiday season.

Throughout the month of December, the light beer company and the digital taxi-finder service are giving away $1 million in cab fare to help prevent drunk driving and encourage people to plan ahead for a safe ride home.

Beginning Dec. 2, through Jan. 5, Bostonians can get a $10 Hailo discount code by visiting bars throughout Boston, Cambridge and Brookline where Miller Lite is served.

MillerCoors and Hailo will be announcing similar partnerships in Chicago and New York City, providing a total of $3 million in taxi fare. Officials made the announcement Monday at Anthem Kitchen and Bar, where representatives from MillerCoors and Hailo shared details on the partnership and safe ride program.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released new data this month that showed drunk driving deaths have increased by nearly five percent in six years.

According to the NHTSA, there were 10,322 drunk driving fatalities in 2012—compared to 9,865 in 2011 – nationwide.

Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) reported that 114 – or roughly 34 percent – of Massachusetts traffic deaths in 2011 were related to drunk driving. The number had dropped slightly from 2010, which saw 122 drunk driving deaths.

The app is available at hailocab.com/boston, and the initiative can be tracked on social media with the hashtag #celebratesafe.
