The annual Christmas Village opens at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving and this year, will remain open until New Year’s Day.

Organizer Thomas Bauer said the demand to stay open an extra week for the first time ever was there. “We will give people who have visitors or family in during the holidays a chance to come out.”

More than 60 vendors will sell ornaments, artwork, jewelry, live Christmas trees, mistletoe and more. On Nov. 30, the village welcomes the original Christkind, the traditional bringer of gifts in Germany, from Nuremberg. That kicks off the monthlong schedule of events that also includes Army/Navy weekend, glass painting, a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus, live music and more.

“There is also a great opportunity to eat,” Bauer said. European fare includes German bratwurst, Belgian waffles and Austrian strudel.

The village will be open during the Mummers parade on Jan. 1, which passes by Love Park. The village moved across from its original location in Dilworth Plaza near City Hall two years ago for construction there.

Highlights of this year’s Christmas Village:

  • Nov. 28 — Sneak Peek opening day
  • Nov. 30 — Grand opening with Christkind, 1 p.m.
  • Dec. 4 — Tree lighting, 5 p.m.
  • Dec. 7-8 — German American Weekend
  • Dec. 14-15 — Army/Navy Weekend
  • Dec. 21-22 — Fundraiser Weekend
  • Dec. 28-29 — Review Weekend
