On Saturday, Philadelaphians will bring awareness to a very serious holiday issue: ugly sweaters.

For the first time in the City of Brotherly Love, runners and walkers can don their best (or is it worst?) holiday sweater for Human Movement Management’s Ugly Sweater Run, a 5K course around Fairmount Park.

“It’s pretty crazy,” said Leah Smith, HMM’s series director for the run. “People make their own sweaters and dress up their dogs, their kids, everyone.”

The event production company puts on runs all around the country like the Zombie Run, Dirty Girl and the Turkey Trot. It’s coming to Philadelphia this week for the first time. HMM was in town for the Color Run and saw the impact it had on the city and the amount of participants.

“We got a lot of response,” Smith said after the group polled people on where to have a sweater run. “It’s definitely going to be one of the biggest races of 2013.”

The run started in the Denver area in 2011 but expanded officially last year in seven cities across the country. This year, there are 32.

But it’s not just all fun and ugly sweaters. Runners are encouraged to bring toys for a Toys for Tots donation. The giving aspect of the run attracted South Jersey’s Ray Budden. He wanted to do a run but still give back this holiday season. The hardest thing so far has been finding a fitting sweater.

“Searching for a sweater has been a real challenge,” he said. “I have the hat, the knee-high socks, interesting shorts but have not found the perfect sweater yet,” he said.

But Budden does know one part of his getup that he’ll wear. “I plan on attaching mistletoe to my Christmas jester hat and meeting lots of new people.”
