Former NYPD Police Commissioner Bill Bratton will return to the beat as the city’s top cop under Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio.

“He has combined the best of tradition and the best of innovation in an extraordinary career of achievement,” de Blasio said Thursday at the Red Hook Community Justice Center.

Bratton, who served as commissioner under Mayor Rudy Giuliani from 1994 to 1996, was seen as a favorite for the job. De Blasio has said that he sought Bratton’s advice throughout the campaign.

Under Bratton, the NYPD introduced the crime-tracking tool CompStat. During his tenure, housing police also merged with the New York City Transit Police, which Bratton headed up between 1990 and 1992 before serving in Boston’s police department as superintendent-in-chief and then police commissioner. The NYPD also implemented darker, navy blue uniforms under Bratton.

The city’s new police commissioner also served as the LAPD chief of police from 2002 to 2009.

“Wherever he’s gone, he’s driven down crime,” de Blasio said.
