Mayor Elect Bill de Blasio on Monday announced two new appointees for his upcoming administration, one of whom will be filling a newly created position: Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development.

De Blasio picked Alicia Glen, currently at Goldman Sachs, to head up that office — ostensibly an important one for a mayor who has made many promises about affordable housing, and will have to grapple with the complexity of funding those initiatives.

Glen has experience doing just that. As Assistant Commissioner of Finance at the New York City Department of Housing, Preservation and Development from 1998-2002, she had to figure out how to finance the rehabilitation and construction of housing units of various income levels, as well as coordinating funding for supportive housing, housing tax credits, and tax incentive programs — all of which will undoubtedly be crucial to making de Blasio’s affordable housing vision a reality.

She also has some experience in common with de Blasio: both have worked under former mayor David Dinkins, though Glen did so when Dinkins was the Manhattan Borough President, not mayor.

De Blasio has also zeroed in on his chief of staff: the current Executive Director of his Transition Team, and former Acting Executive Director of the Democratic National Committee, Laura Santucci.

Santucci has also worked with labor in a lobbying capacity, for the local union 1199 SEIU.
