Pregnant nurse fired after refusing flu shot
A pregnant Central Pennsylvania nurse was fired after she refused to get a flu shot over fears it would cause a miscarriage.
Dreonna Breton, 29, a registered nurse with Horizons Healthcare Services, said the shot may not be safe for pregnant women, according to 6 ABC, so she refused to get one. She offered to wear a mask during flu season, but that was not adequate for her employer, which fired her on Dec. 17.
Horizons requires all employees to get the influenza vaccine.
Breton suffered two miscarriages this year, according to ABC, and fears a third.
Company spokesman Alan Peterson told ABC that it’s “unconscionable for a health care worker not to be immunized.”
He added that pregnant women are more vulnerable to the flu.
