A Chester County attorney was busted last week for selling expensive, fine and rare wines out of his Malvern home.

The Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced today that on Jan. 6 state police seized just under 2,500 bottles of high-end wine valued at between $150,000 and $200,000 after a raid of 49-year-old attorney Arthur David Goldman’s home.

An investigation by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, which included officers posing as buyers, discovered Goldman was running a private mail order wine business without a liquor license, and was buying the wine from outside the state.

“The defendant imported a collection of high-end wine that included over two thousand bottles. He made those wines available for sale to his own private list of customers knowing that it was illegal,” said First Assistant District Attorney Michael Noone in a news release.

“This was not some casual exchange of wine between friends,” he added. “The defendant was running a highly organized, high-volume illegal business operation to make money.”

He is charged with violating the Pennsylvania Liquor Code, and could face fines of up to $200,000.

Peter E. Kratsa, who is representing Goldman, said in a statement that he read “his friend” Noone’s remarks and disagreed on several of his points, which he said he would challenge in a courtroom if necessary.

“I have found Mr. Goldman to be a very engaging man even during this extremely trying time in his life. He is an accomplished professional,” Kratsa said. “He is appropriately contrite. To the extent it is procedurally practical, we will continue to cooperate with the investigation.”
