South Shore Hospital is investigating the deaths of two women during childbirth.

Colleen A. Celia, 32, of Middleboro, and Christie Billodeau Fazio, 30, of Marshfield, both died while giving birth to healthy babies at the Weymouth hospital in the last two months. Fazio was also a nurse at the hospital.

Doctors told Celia’s family that she had an amniotic fluid embolism, where the fluid enters the bloodstream, according to the Taunton Gazette.

Representatives for the hospital say the deaths “appear to be unpredictable and unpreventable,” and claim they will complete intense investigations into the incidents.

On Sunday, hospital spokeswoman Sarah Darcy released this statement: “We’ve initiated a thorough review of what happened and we’re also in contact with the Department of Public Health, which would be standard procedure for events like these. Right now it’s early, but there’s no indication in our early review that anything could have been done to avoid these outcomes.”

GoFundMe pages have been set up for both women’s families.

In July, South Shore Hospital was recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals Issue as ranking No. 5 overall in the Boston metro area, just behind Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospitals, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.
