Pennsylvania ranks fourth in nation for black homicide victimization

Pennsylvania ranks fourth in the United States in the rate of black homicide victimization, according to an analysis put out recently by the Violence Policy Center.

Its rate is 29.92 per 100,000, which is more than one and half times the national black homicide victimization rate. And, it’s more than six times the overall homicide victimization rate nationwide, results of the analysis have found.

The analysis is based on unpublished data from the FBI’s yearly Supplementary Homicide Report. This report is based on data from 2011, the most recent year data is available.

By the numbers

449

The number of black homicide victims in 2011 in Pennsylvania, resulting in a homicide rate of 29.02 per 100,000.

17.51

The national black homicide rate per 100,000

4.44

The overall national homicide rate per 100,000

According to the data, for Pennsylvania homicides where a weapon used was identified, 350 out of 410 black homicide victims (or 85 percent) were shot and killed with guns. Nationwide, that number was at 82 percent.

“Gun violence is a public health crisis that touches all Americans, but the impact on African Americans is especially devastating,” said VPC Executive Director Josh Sugarmann in a release. “This report should be a wake-up call for our elected officials to address the disproportionately high homicide victimization rate among black men and women. The longer we wait to act, the more lives will be lost.”

The three states above Pennsylvania were:

1. Nebraska — 34.43
2Missouri — 33.38
3. Michigan — 31.54
