Man, 67, struck and killed by drunk driver on Staten Island
A 67-year-old Staten Island man died on Sunday after being struck by a vehicle operated by a drunk driver, police said.
James Benedict was walking northbound in the bike lane on Lily Pond Avenue in Fort Wadsworth about 6:55 p.m. when a 2004 Lexus hit him from behind. Benedict was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Lexus, 39-year-old Michael Pogorzelski, was taken into custody at the scene and later charged with driving while intoxicated.
