Mayor Bill de Blasio has joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a national bipartisan coalition co-founded by his predecessor.

In joining Thursday, de Blasio praised former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s efforts with the group, which pushes for gun control regulations to keep illegal weapons out of cities.

“We are taking every step within our power to protect our people, and we need our leaders in Washington and other states across the country to do the same,” de Blasio said in a statement.

“Mayor Bloomberg took on this fight when few others would, and today we are safer for it. He built a national movement for commonsense gun control — one I am proud to join,” de Blasio continued.

Bloomberg said it was “meaningful” for de Blasio to join because the former mayor still lives in the city.

“Mayors are on the front lines of preventing gun violence in their communities and they know better than anybody else the daily toll of gun violence in our cities and towns,” Bloomberg said in a statement.

De Blasio pledged to pursue measures locally and in Washington to combat gun trafficking and illegal gun sales.

He said he would work with the city’s congressional delegation to advance laws increasing penalties for straw purchase of guns, as well as upping coordination between states and federal authorities to ensure guns stay out of the hands of the severely mentally ill and those convicted of domestic violence.
