As snow continues to pile up throughout the Boston area, officials are asking drivers to use extreme caution and be prepared for significant delays.

Throughout Wednesday morning, Massachusetts State Police were reporting treacherous road conditions, including several accidents and multiple cars spinning out on the highway. In Leominster, troopers headed to the scene of three-car crash involving a plow on Route 495 after Exit 27. There were no reported injuries.

As of 8 a.m., crews totaling 3,402 had been dispatched to plow state roads, which the Department of Transportation described as wet and slushy.

State police ask that drivers who must be out on the roads to ensure their gas tank is full and their cellphone fully charged to call for help if needed. The state Department of Transportation, along with municipal and private plow crews, was working to clear roadways, but commuters should take great care, caution and patience.

“Unsafe and reckless operation endangers everyone,” state police said in a tweet.

Early Wednesday morning, Gov. Deval Patrick’s office said in a statement that non-emergency state employees working in Executive Branch agencies should not report to work. Those who do plan on driving should use extreme caution, but it’s best to stay off roads if possible. If you must go out, the use of public transit is encouraged.

As of 7 a.m., just 1.6 inches of snow had accumulated at Boston’s Logan Airport. The National Weather Service reported that heavy snowfall will continue throughout the day, with some sleet and freezing rain mixing in closer to the south coastline. An additional 1 to 2 inches will accumulate every hour.
