A Cambridge man was in court Wednesday for allegedly tormenting a police dog after police say he taunted an MBTA Transit Police K-9 to the point that the agitated animal suffered a cut to his eye.

Transit Police said Antonio Brown, 25, approached a Transit Police cruiser Tuesday night on Massachusetts Avenue as it was stopped at a light near Washington Street and began to “hiss, grunt and bark” at the dog, named Viktor, who was seated in the vehicle’s rear.

His inexplicable actions, according to police, caused Viktor to become excited and agitated. The dog jumped and spun in the backseat of the cruiser, causing him to suffer a small laceration next to his left eye that required treatment from his handler.

The transit officer jumped out of the cruiser and chased Brown, who police say was “laughing as he was running away.”

He was eventually apprehended after escaping in a motor vehicle.

Rob Halpin, a spokesman for MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center, said that the unusual incident seems to be isolated.

“I can’t recall similar instances in which someone has deliberated agitated a police (or other working) dog so as to cause the animal to harm itself. In this case the injury, thankfully, appears both minor and treatable. And we’re glad to see the police moving ahead with pressing charges,” Halpin said.
