Port Authority officer stops Manhattan woman from jumping off George Washington Bridge
Port Authority police stopped a 25-year-old Manhattan woman from jumping off the George Washington Bridge late Monday morning.
A spokesman for the Port Authority reported that a Port Authority officer approached the New York-side tower’s walkway after the woman leaned over the outer rail at around 11:45 a.m.
The woman stood on the rail with her upper body hanging over the water when officer Christopher Outhouse approached her. Pentangelo said that the woman tried to run from the scene towards Manhattan after pushing herself off the rail.
Outhouse reportedly apprehended her, who remains unidentified, and was treated by emergency services when investigators said they found unfilled medical prescription for bipolar disorder and depression treatments.
Her cell phone also allegedly had text messages in which she threatened to kill herself and allusions to a previous attempted overdose.
The woman was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for psychiatric evaluation, Pentangelo wrote in a statement.
