Nearly 200 dogs, cats, hedgehogs, birds and reptiles are recovering after being rescued from a Lynnfield hoarding home late last month.

The homeowner had died under non-suspicious circumstances, police said.

“The vast majority of the animals are very sick but are being treated for conditions ranging from [eye infections], upper respiratory infections, internal and external parasites and dental disease,” said MSPCA-Angell Spokesman Rob Halpin.

“There’s no evidence the animals were being bred to be sold – it’s more likely the situation just got terribly out of hand,” he said.

In total, the MSPCA and the Animal Rescue League of Boston jointly rescued 27 dogs (four of whom are month-old puppies), 77 cats and kittens, 81 birds, six hedgehogs and eight reptiles out of the home, Halpin said.

The MSPCA’s Boston shelter is caring for many dogs and cats while 65 of the birds – including large parrots – are at the Nevins Farm adoption center in Methuen.

“It’s going to take several weeks and significant follow-up care to bring most of the cats around, but we expect to start placing them for adoption in the next month or two,” said Alyssa Krieger, head of the MSPCA’s Boston adoption center.

“Fortunately the dogs and many of the birds are ready for adoption today and we hope to find permanent homes for them very soon.” Krieger added that all of the dogs and cats will be spayed or neutered prior to going to new homes.
