A Southwest Philadelphia man tried to use a SEPTA bus as an ambulance earlier this morning.

The man, suffering from a gunshot wound, tried to catch a ride to the hospital around 7 a.m,, officials said.

Police Spokeswoman Jillian Russell said the 31-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been released, was shot in the right thigh on the 700 block of south 57th Street.

SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern said after the shooting the man made his way to 58th Street and Baltimore Avenue and boarded the southbound Route G bus.

He told the bus driver he was shot, but instead of taking a seat, he got off, Redfern said.

She said he then crossed the street and boarded a northbound bus, which was headed to Lankenau Medical Center on the Main Line.

The operator of the first bus alerted SEPTA authorities, who stopped the second bus two blocks after the injured man boarded.

He is in stable condition at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Redfern said she isn’t sure if there were any blood stains left on either bus. She said she’s not sure if there is a protocol in case an injured passenger boards.
