This week, SEPTA officials will make an announcement about Market East Station.

SEPTA has only stated that they will announce a “change” to the station located off Market Street between 10th and 8th streets in Center City.

A SEPTA press release states that SEPTA’s general manager Joe Casey, SEPTA board members Pat Deon and Cuyler Walker, and City Councilman Mark Squilla will participate in the announcement, scheduled to be held at the Market East Station, Section B at 10th and Filbert streets, at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Rumors have already spread about a potential name change to the station.

Technically Philly reported last week that Market East Station may be renamed Jefferson Station, after nearby Thomas Jefferson University, based on an anonymous tipster’s picture of a new SEPTA map.

Jerri Williams, SEPTA’s director of communications, said she cannot “confirm anything” in regards to the renaming of the station.

“We’re having an event to announce the change on Thursday morning,” SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern said.

According to SEPTA, 26,000 passengers are ride Regional Rail trains through Market East every weekday.
