Macy’s accidentally sells $1500 necklace for $47

We understand, we’re a newspaper and website, being a copy editor is extremely difficult. Sometimes you make gaffes so bad you end up on this list.

Looks like someone from Macy’s copy writing team might be getting the boot.

Macy’s most recent catalog had the best deal, ever: A diamond necklace with an original price of $1,500 was on sale for $47.The necklace is listed as sterling silver and 14-karat gold.

That’s a steal, right? I assume men were lining up to buy it just to give it to their wives on Valentine’s Day 2014.

Turns out it was a major typo. The sale was supposed to be for $479. Whoops.

A number of customers were able to purchase the necklace at $47 but Macy’s eventually caught on to the mistake and posted signs on counters at its jewelry stores apologizing for the error.

One Dallas, Texas resident, Robert Bernard, tried purchasing two necklaces.

“It says ‘Super Buy!’” he told WFAA.com while holding up the Macy’s advertisement.

Bernard visited the Collin Creek Mall to purchase the necklace but the man in front of him, presumably realizing the deal was too good to be true, bought all the necklaces in stock.

Bernard purchased the two necklaces and the clerk told him they would be shipped to his home.

Then Macy’s realized the mistake. A few days later Bernard received a voicemail from Macys:

“The item has the wrong price for $47. The correct price is $479 and because of that pricing error, your order has been canceled and I apologize.”

It is unclear how many necklaces Macy’s sold at the extremely discounted price.
