VIDEO: Was the ‘Glee’ school shooting episode too soon after Newtown?

Thursday night’s episode of “Glee” struck a chord with many viewers, as the typically upbeat show took a dark turn with a long and tense school shooting scene. It was a particularly controversial episode for those who have experienced the tragedy of a school shooting firsthand.

The Newtown Action Alliance, an organization based in the town that endured the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in December, posted this message on its Facebook page:

According to someone who blogs for an Internet site that is a TV spoiler site, the TV show, “Glee” that airs tonight on Fox is going to depict a school shooting from the vantage point of the students hiding in the dark. He said it is extremely harrowing and it even freaked him out and he’s not from here.

I would suggest if you do watch this TV show to either not watch it tonight or watch with caution.

The episode began with the sound of gunshots in the school, as the students and their teachers scrambled in terror to lock their classroom doors and hide. None of the characters were shot.

While gun control is one of the hottest topics in the country right now, many people in Newtown spoke out against the show’s producers at Fox for airing such an episode so soon after the Sandy Hook massacre, which claimed the lives of 26 children and adults. Parents criticized the show for not personally reaching out to the Newtown community to warn them about the episode’s potentially disturbing effect.

“We’re going through a healing phase right now and without giving us any kind of warning, it’s going to open up wounds we’re trying to close right now,” parent Andrew Paley said, according to PerezHilton. “I think it’s terrible that the writers and producers of that show didn’t think to contact someone in Newtown to let us know this was coming. A lot of people watch that show. They shouldn’t be upset by it.”
